For beginners, certifications are beneficial. It shows the commitment about a field and a focus on the subject. General certifications are really good to enhance your knowledge. Since the good certifications often require exams, it shows you have understood the topics well to pass the exams.
Also, it keeps you ahead of some candidates. When interviewing, you will stand out with the big organization’s certificates such as SAFe agile, IBM design thinking, AIPMM etc. At least when you are starting from zero it tells the interviewer you are oriented and ready to take on the product world.
On the other hand, you should not have false hopes of getting in product field just by certifications. May be someone who is really lucky and the company is desperate to hire someone quickly they give an edge to the person who has most certification for a fresher, but mostly they would look at mix of skills, experience, background and many other factors. What truly creates a difference is your certifications combined with the practical experience within product management. Once you have done the certification, it is better to start looking at existing products and evaluating and then redefining the products in your own words and hypothesis and say, how you could make a difference in the product.
So, what’s the verdict? Should you rush out and get every certification that is out there and show in your resume that you are highly qualified? Not quite, rathert be strategic about the certifications you pursue. Look for ones that align with your career goals and the specific needs of the companies you’re targeting. Remember, certifications alone won’t clinch the deal. Be prepared to back up your certifications with concrete examples from your experience. Show how you’ve applied what you’ve learned in real-world scenarios.
In a nutshell, certifications can certainly add some extra sparkle to your resume, but they’re not the be-all and end-all. Ultimately, it’s how you present yourself, your experience, and your passion for the role that will make the biggest impression.
